Authoritarian Leadership
Authoritarian leadership is not democracy-based. Not even a little bit. Authoritarian leadership sadly is one of the most utilized leadership styles today. Now, this is not to say that there are not good points to be found in this form of leadership. I am sure that there are some, but this is more of a compliance-based leadership style and may work when you’re working inside a nuclear power plant, I mean, no one wants anyone to be flexible or ‘do their own thing,’ wielding such power and ability to do harm.
However, in most roles, an Authoritarian leadership style is going to devalue the individual in relation to the task. This is certainly a top-down leadership style that is also referred to as Autocratic. It is non-participative in that there is no real consideration given to the ideas or opinions of the employees.
This leadership is seen as power and control, and it is not shared. Wikipedia reports, “An authoritarian leadership style is exemplified when a leader dictates policies and procedures, decides what goals are to be achieved, and directs and controls all activities without any meaningful participation by the subordinates.[1] Such a leader has full control of the team, leaving low autonomy within the group.”
